Impressive Life-Sized Hooded Merganser by Harry Ross (1914–1992), "The Shanty Artist" (North Conwy, NH), circa 1970
A wonderful bird in a striking pose with highly detailed carving on crest, wings and bill. That carving, combined with its elaborate paint work, make this a must-have piece. Signed on bottom.
Ross' carvings are all quite impressive. He was known for his miniatures and half-sized carvings. This is the only example of a life-size carving we are aware of.
Some discoloration to breast where a knot bled through, several small spots of touch-up in wing area.
Measures 11.75" high, base is 16" wide. Bird tip to tail 13"
