Hooded Merganser by Ralph Laurie (1883–1964; Hingham, MA)
 
This folky little guy, and the loon, are my favorites of the collection. Look at that head—its just killer! Folk art at its best. A round full-bodied carving with a striking paint pattern and split tail with a soft mellow patina.
 
Fresh from an old-time MA collection that was collected and upgraded over 50+ years.
 
Some minor flaking of the body, which does not detract from its appeal. Otherwise excellent and original. No stamp.
 
Measures just over 4" tall.
