Large Maine Merganser
This bird exhibits what great Maine decoys are known for: a large oversize body, an inletted head, and wonderful flowing lines. In addition, the decoy has a rather unusual oak peg bill and something you seldom see on a Maine decoy ... fanciful scratch painting!
"Probable South Addison ME" is written on the bottom, however, the Harpswell area seems more likely, as there is a lot of Alexander family influence.
Structurally sound with average in-use wear and old repaint on the head. The bill could be an old replacement but other birds I have seen by this maker have identical oak bills.
Measures 18" long, 6.75" high, 8" wide.
