Woodpecker on Stump (1938)
I always thought woodpeckers were birds with attitudes. This funky carving certainly has that and more. Mounted on a hightly detailed hollow tree stump with a nest of eggs. The carving pattern exhibits deep relief carved wings and tail, carved feet. He has a bold strong paint pattern.
Professional touch-up to chips of paint on bill, one leg, small area of breast, and a little chip on very tip of stump. Signed on bottom (JA VALVA Aug 3 1938).
One of the coolest pieces we have handled in a while.
Measures 6.75" tall (total height).
